Forgiveness and

Today’s readings are difficult to read and especially to live if we really listen. But…

I can not think of anyone I know who would not agree that forgiveness is central to the Christian life. In fact Pope Francis addresses that directly in his homily this morning.

So, if everyone agrees that we are all called to forgive and everyone agrees that it is good and healthy; why is it news worthy and why do we need to be reminded?

I think part of the reason is because, we confuse forgiveness and reconciliation; sometimes thinking they are the same thing. A few things we commonly hear are:

How can I forgive someone who has never genuinely asked for forgiveness or admits any wrong doing? If I forgive someone who isn’t really sorry, doesn’t that make me look like a fool; isn’t that the same as giving the offender permission to hurt and or lie to me again?

The answer is: forgiveness is something we do as an individual. It is something we offer to open the door to healing. Reconciliation (restoring a relationship) involves someone else and is not something we can do on our own. However, in order for reconciliation to be possible the door to forgiveness must be open first. Forgiveness opens the door so healing can happen and presents the opportunity for a restored relationship.

I am definetly not an expert on this subject and it is something I struggle with in my own life. I know in my own life I have been both the offender and offended; and my familiarity with both sides does not make it any easier.

However, I did find this link very helpful. I encourage you to read the provided links and consider how today’s scripture readings may apply to your own life today.
